Whether the sketch was produced while in the back of a car, traveling on horrendous roads or under the shade of a tree on a bright day or in the middle of a rainstorm; each is embedded with meaning and understanding. I have been deeply effected by what I saw and what I experienced. Hopefully those feelings and stories are demonstrated in my sketches. I have had a great time and can’t believe that it has gone by so fast. Today we went to the Bahai Lotus Temple in Delhi. I have been really looking forward to visiting this place for some time now. The beauty of the temple comes from its simplicity in material and form. The building unfolds through a series of concrete and marble lotus petals. From the outside these monolithic petals reach heavenward. It is only on the inside that I began to understand the structure. Many concrete ribs follow the forms of the petals and tie the structure together. Light softly enters the main worship hall from above as it seeps downward in-between the petals. No photos were allowed in the interior of the hall so as to not distract from the prayers, meditations and contemplations of the visitors. So I decided to sketch part of the interior and couldn’t help but think of sketching as a form of meditation. There is something cleansing and peaceful about sketching. It allows one to focus at a high level, but also let loose of the restrictions of the mind and allow you to simply create. Never has a sketch turned out exactly the way that I have planned in my mind but I am alright with that. The joy of sketching is purely in the doing of it. I have often thought that we may spend too much time thinking about design instead of doing and allowing ourselves to enjoy what we do. Perhaps over-thinking gets in our way of designing and we miss out on the simple beauty of creation. Maybe it is not so much the act or acts of thinking but our tendency to fixate on ideas and not allow ourselves to see or reach beyond our own thinking. It is only by extending beyond our own thoughts that we become capable of obtaining something that it truly greater than ourselves.Jacob Gineshttp://www.blogger.com/profile/15762111258760112956noreply@blogger.com1tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-5595398707029850033.post-89232862229608470742009-03-29T21:23:00.000-07:002009-03-29T21:25:01.966-07:00March 26, 2009 - Long drive to DelhiDriving from Khajuraho to Delhi makes for a very long day; 15 hours to be precise. Right when you think you are moving along pretty good you enter the craziness of a town or there is road construction or the road just plain sucks. While aimlessly staring out the back window of our car I couldn’t help but think about the poverty of this place. It is so sad when a young mother covered in dirt and grim approaches you begging for food for herself and her baby. The baby is clinging to her mother as she rests on her hip; staring at you with hopelessness in their eyes. And then there are the times when you are in the car and there is the endless tapping of the fingers on the windows. There is also the lame or disfigured boy; crawling around in the filth and garbage of the streets. And the young toddler playing in the gutter while cars speed by within feet of her. These are only a few of the many scenes that I have observed while here in India. My heart aches for all those who have not been blessed in the ways that I have. It makes me very grateful for the family, opportunities, and blessings in my life.

On a different note, if the driving in this country is crazy then it takes on a whole new level of craziness when you drive at night. People seem to creep out of the shadows and there are the endless sounds of horns mixed with the smells of diesel fuel and the occasional wretched scents of sewer and burning garbage. All of which when combined together make for an experience that I will not soon forget.Jacob Gineshttp://www.blogger.com/profile/15762111258760112956noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-5595398707029850033.post-34141514893712666212009-03-29T20:59:00.000-07:002009-03-29T21:23:52.203-07:00March 25, 2009 - Khajuraho<img style="margin: 0px auto 10px; The first temple was built as a tribute to the Moon God who had a forbidden love with a queen in the land. Over the next few decades several temples were erected as a symbol of power and gratitude to their gods. These temples are covered with figures of the human body. The most interesting being the Kama Sutra figures scattered throughout the facades. These figures were placed on the temples to provide the patrons the opportunity to admire and respect the human body, but not to linger or meditate on the images; otherwise they would be led to sinful paths of seduction and temptation. These greatest architects in the land were gathered to construct these temples and as their reward large tracks of land and precious things were given them. Over the years the people were conquered by invading armies. Slowly the temples fell into ruin. Even now this complex is nothing short of impressive. Each temple is placed on a pediment, often one pediment is shared by multiple temples. Each similar in their architecture but varying in detail and scale. Axial symmetry along the main stair and entry to each temple is maintained throughout. The mass and weight of the structures are contrasted by a band of recesses; proportionally slicing the building and adding an even stronger reading of depth to the architecture. You can’t help but be overwhelmed by the obvious complexity of the details, but standing back you can begin to understand the underlying structures, scale and proportions.

While visiting the temples a horrible storm swept in. It began with an extreme dust storm; we had to take cover in a temple and wait for it to pass. Having to remove our shoes before entering the temples I just hoped that my shoes would still be around and not carried off by the wind during the storm. Following the dust storm the rain came; slowly at first then gradually picking up. I tried feverishly to complete a sketch before it got too bad. My drawing still holds the rain watermarks and staining from the dirt. Some may think that those marks ruined the drawing, but I see them as a unique expression of the unpredictable; and forever when I look at the image I will remember the environmental conditions that surrounded that day.

In the evening we returned to the western temples for a “sound and light show”. It was amazing to observed the temples under dramatic lighting. The geometries read even stronger and more powerful. The event was narrated in English and boy was it bad. I had to laugh a few times at the over-the-top theatrical nature to it – by the way the British accents were horrible too.

Of course our journey back to the hotel was like a gauntlet of pushy store venders trying to get you to buy some little trinket or come into their store and purchase an item that you really don’t need anyway. As we approached the hotel our diver was sitting out front with a few people. He had been talking me up as this famous architect from the United States. Famous, now that is news to me. He had me get out my sketchbook that I have been keeping and showed every single page to those around. I got a kick out of it. I guess there really is power in being an architect! I have to admit, it was fun showing off my sketches. I guess Amerpal was so excited that he decided to get completely sloppy drunk that night. At dinner he could barely grab his food, it was really bad. I had to help him to his room where he decided to give me multiple large hugs and tried to wrestle me. Eventually I got him in his room. I just hope that he will be fine for our 15 hour drive to Delhi in the morning. It boasts having the first ancient telephone. From an upper room there were tubes carved into the stone wall that traveled three stories below to the indoor swimming pool. So the King and one of his many Queens could have a conversation as they lounged around. Another interesting feature was the room that had eight columns arranged in a circle. Attached at each column were metal rings that allowed for swings to be attached and the eight Queens could swing while the King sat in the middle admiring them. The twist to the story is that when the Fort was taken over by the son of the King who built the Taj Mahal he turned the swing room into a torture and death chamber. The same rings that once held the ropes of the swings now were used to secure his prisoners. In this room he also executed his younger brother. When an invading King was approaching the Fort and the take over was eminent all of the queens gathered at the pool, which had been drained, and made a fire and jumped into it. They would rather die than be captured and become the servants of the invading king. It is amazing how the story of the architecture and events surrounding it changes it significance, etc…

Next we visited the Saas-Bahu Temple complex, which consists of two temples. The first thing that I noticed was the intricate carvings of figures that seemed to engulf the facades and interiors of the structures. These figures give away the fact that the temples are Hindu, because Muslim structures are void of figures and only contain ornamental designs and abstract symbols. As I moved through the architecture I was overwhelmed by the amount of images; making it almost impossible to process. I decided to try a different media for the sketches of this place. I found a nice place on one of the temples and began the process of capturing the essence of this place. It was so peaceful and relaxing sitting there letting the graphite scratch out the image.

The Teli-ka-Mandir is such a dominate structure; towering overhead. Its presence I’m sure was felt by all in the city below. For its overall size, the inner temple is relatively small. There were remnants of what it was like when it was in full use. I am sure it was even more impressive than it is now. Surrounding the temple is a square pediment. The temple itself has the general plan of an equal sided cross; of course with all the ornamentation and stepping it appears more intricate. The forms appear to be cascading to the ground as the building reaches toward the heavens.

Equally impressive are the carvings at the base of the hill. Giant figures chiseled out of stone; ever making their presence known to all that pass by.Jacob Gineshttp://www.blogger.com/profile/15762111258760112956noreply@blogger.com3tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-5595398707029850033.post-80452777257400402052009-03-23T12:23:00.000-07:002009-03-23T12:30:31.301-07:00March 23, 2009 - Agra<img style="display:block; margin:0px auto 10px; text-align:center;cursor:pointer; cursor:hand;width: 240px; height: 320px;" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEgoPrg6Ar9R6b8UqbtNiiewaRl06_nLd7Ty9NsADYA-Rca7quASt7Q7eWcf3L_fwqvX3q2ydJrwBojSGAQNojF3xNJyDQf6Dcf_tZWUsPdF12viTH2ry1Gyv5JXF9Wim70tdoi1EvZZB8DS/s320/India+107.jpg" border="0" alt=""id="BLOGGER_PHOTO_ID_5316467730219724066" />
<img style="display:block; margin:0px auto 10px; text-align:center;cursor:pointer; cursor:hand;width: 320px; height: 240px;" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEigw6Io10SZ28D6MRI1X-lUJmOWS8SSNIe4sGVSvF4bdqGHC9m7zWsgJ4xALioXd7xj2R4Zyz-REtRb-Nm_qUKarWRTAte1YOkGsWguWLIkQayyZy_bTvqnEjmOuDnplBXEiBaI8OuDA43W/s320/India+091.jpg" border="0" alt=""id="BLOGGER_PHOTO_ID_5316467725644613698" />
<img style="display:block; margin:0px auto 10px; text-align:center;cursor:pointer; cursor:hand;width: 320px; height: 240px;" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEiB5BvzsLdEaZf917jVAFDbLcqkFo6NFJMpYcWfMBeJtQD25gypfg1LmGjPS00rwK53KznaoeFZj6vkYzQEWWxwhUx3mlqs8rXgmug8ep-x0OGdaIPvQdwZXLxqXNB7LERVHMqvBxuz496l/s320/India+084.jpg" border="0" alt=""id="BLOGGER_PHOTO_ID_5316467726231904434" />
<img style="display:block; margin:0px auto 10px; text-align:center;cursor:pointer; cursor:hand;width: 240px; height: 320px;" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEh2ws_EdgJBqVnP9pme46OD77tc1oXnwAsZdDwNy6xfBwVdAYnaWicRxfvblkrtODThzbJd6wsU02c3SzJFemOVsLqAkTQOkCzj49F2zyNbzcrBtJcEKmtbbgIG2aZaAT9h0R9g5QMqGRSq/s320/India+056.jpg" border="0" alt=""id="BLOGGER_PHOTO_ID_5316466922200798018" />
<img style="display:block; margin:0px auto 10px; text-align:center;cursor:pointer; cursor:hand;width: 240px; height: 320px;" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEgyoWjW-CD4GFXylsV9OYPYDiprCvUsAJqoZngmeLNTXCGlxmdY45BhKWYKn8funGOogPNxhl9HU9hCZDr4hRrcG506h89Aa6sNEsF8HH7kKM2xlpAa58OVis-HrPFfbFcDRUNGcx6WaVdv/s320/India+055.jpg" border="0" alt=""id="BLOGGER_PHOTO_ID_5316466900660477426" />
<img style="display:block; margin:0px auto 10px; text-align:center;cursor:pointer; cursor:hand;width: 240px; height: 320px;" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEiLvlwLUT-ra2AX3wtRprpC7n0EYJaMcihnL52NLnBZXN5wCTpugQWNZ3gL66tgirvrWCL1BXzzN7S9OLLSHwmtU-ZDMh2kQJOCGy6ubT-xDwUfFuYWNcm7aWiMA5KbQneN6iDkTcpTCn1d/s320/India+052.jpg" border="0" alt=""id="BLOGGER_PHOTO_ID_5316466892169716962" />
This morning we woke up with much anticipation for our visit to the Taj Mahal. Our personal tour guide for the day was a man by the name of Bobby. An interesting side note is that for the entire day as our guide he charged us 650 rupees. This equates to around 13 American dollars. I was more than a little blown away. In addition, we also visited a carpet making factory and observed this hand crafted art. The gentleman showing us around showed us a 10 foot by 12 foot carpet. The price was 1,800 U.S. dollars. He explained that it would take three people one year to make such a rug; and then another couple of months for trimming, cleaning and drying. Can you imagine working on something for a year in your meager hut on the outskirts of town, in the dirt, working your fingers numb and then that carpet is sold for $1,800? I didn’t dare ask what the workers were paid to create such an item – I am sure it was next to nothing.

Well back to the architecture. The Taj Mahal is truly amazing. The story goes that the Emperor’s wife had complications with the birth of her second daughter and while on her death bed she made her husband promise her three things. 1. Never marry again. 2. Make sure that their children were very well taken care of. 3. When she was dead that he would build the greatest monument ever constructed to her. He completed all three. The basic structure of the Taj Mahal took 7 years to construct and the white marble and detail work took an additional 15 years to complete; making the total construction time 22 years. In contrast to the poverty of the city and country this building is indeed one of the Seven Wonders of the World. A great architectural competition was instigated by the Emperor and an architect from Iran was chosen. Every part of the Taj was designed to have perfect symmetry and balance. The only part of the Taj that is not symmetrical is the placement of the tomb of the Emperor. His wife’s tomb is on the center line and his is adjacent to the west side of hers. Originally the Emperor had planned to build a black Taj Mahal across the river, but as construction began the Emperor’s son imprisoned his father and would not allow it to be built. The Emperor was kept in the Jasmine Tower at Agra Fort overlooking the Taj Mahal; only allowed to leave to visit the Taj to pay tribute to his wife. At the end of our tour my dad and I spent about an hour resting in the shade gazing up at the Taj. The structure is so simple yet the detailing is so complex.

After visiting the Agra Fort we traveled to the opposite side of the river so I could sketch. I forgot to mention that the security personnel would not allow me to bring my sketchbook into the Taj complex, so I was unable to sketch the Taj from the front. I guess in some way this was a good thing; without this restriction I probably wouldn’t have made it a point to go to the other side of the river to view the Taj. Once in position on the north side of the river I found a place to sit on a little piece of concrete. It started off as a comfortable spot but gradually over the next hour became a somewhat painful place to be sitting. I began twice sketching the Taj and it just was not coming out right. Finally I told myself to stop thinking and worrying about the sketch and to just draw! Slowly over the next hour the sketch began to come together. Often children would come up to talk and look at what I was doing. When I first began sketching in public places I would get nervous when people would look over my shoulder, but slowly I have learned to appreciate the attention.Jacob Gineshttp://www.blogger.com/profile/15762111258760112956noreply@blogger.com2tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-5595398707029850033.post-4780886093673512502009-03-23T12:18:00.000-07:002009-03-29T21:21:16.092-07:00March 22, 2009 - Fatehpur Sikri<img style="display:block; margin:0px auto 10px; text-align:center;cursor:pointer; cursor:hand;width: 240px; height: 320px;" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEjsP5cb9-Cd3QUzcMISb_NpR0WF6jEMKDnYuBJttW_OFEwdDF1hKv_A1yiRLdkogOY7vo0UMgmHhthGTMivzsTfy4dQoBD3MxEleOMW2M31DmVcEqNW3YmJH70AiL39YkgCRDf94HBfGc3r/s320/India+026.jpg" border="0" alt=""id="BLOGGER_PHOTO_ID_5316465799355382818" />
<img style="display:block; margin:0px auto 10px; text-align:center;cursor:pointer; cursor:hand;width: 240px; height: 320px;" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEgI2K1x4GloLg2lPlmZ4Uh0R2tc3_GE2QsSrFZQw7L_9SMVVFIXAwbt47n41g-uvXWWIaneMyZIdtHeHE4KGahcSC5DcgRz4R4Z4p7jjZON5bPdHGMwRsrOTGYZ7iaMsNDGV6sXqs0kPqbh/s320/India+023.jpg" border="0" alt=""id="BLOGGER_PHOTO_ID_5316465793377327426" />
<img style="display:block; margin:0px auto 10px; text-align:center;cursor:pointer; cursor:hand;width: 320px; height: 240px;" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEicnpY7LxwAWHuxgr7-iw7DJXtaG04yVgzZ-5YIljY4h2yU327H-FlgJY3rQPBc4hv5r59FnnQiHwSF62hXkzcwlSz7asDbIw7HJM6ZSRSvbNmW0zsBthikzwiRwDrxSlo8G1rDMgqkNSKW/s320/India+013.jpg" border="0" alt=""id="BLOGGER_PHOTO_ID_5316465766569869842" />
At Fatehput Sikri, a few miles out of Agra, we purchased a simple cloth to offer in the temple. These cloths are then given to the poor in the village so they can make clothes for themselves. The ceremony consisted of presenting the cloth on what I would presume was some type of alter, and then scattering flower petals over the cloth. Over time layers upon layers of these cloths and petals are built up on the alter. Next a simple string was given to us to tie to the stone screens that surround the inner chamber of the temple. While tying the string to the screen we made a wish, the deepest desire of our hearts. It came with a 100 percent guarantee! I am hoping for big things! The surrounding walls of the main building at Fatehpur Sikri is lined with domed lanterns; creating a stunning architecture. I can only imagine what it would have looked like in its prime with the lanterns all glowing. The gate that I sketched is rumored to be the tallest gate in all of Asia; adding to the impressiveness and grandeur of Fatehpur Sikri. While sketching, a group of school students came over to see what I was doing and insisted on having each and every student’s picture taken with me and my father. Each boy would sit between my father and I; they would wrap their arms around us for the picture. It was entertaining and a bit funny to say the least.

While traveling the road between Fatehpur Sikri and Agra there were thousands upon thousands of Muslims walking toward Fatehpur Sikri. They were making their weekly trek to the Temple. You have to understand, this was not a one or two mile trek. This was a 15 to 20 mile journey from Agra. That type of devotion touched me. Not many people have that kind of devotion in the world these days. Little children were walking and women were carrying bags a top their heads and often with a baby in their arms. Walking and walking and walking. I had a gentlemen tell me the other day that the Muslims are fanatical; this may be true but this act of the journey to temple was respectable and inspirational.Jacob Gineshttp://www.blogger.com/profile/15762111258760112956noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-5595398707029850033.post-54381260894143326182009-03-23T12:08:00.000-07:002009-03-29T21:20:41.892-07:00March 21, 2009 - Alwar<img style="display:block; margin:0px auto 10px; text-align:center;cursor:pointer; cursor:hand;width: 240px; height: 320px;" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEj1M5e6CwOrboieUvnDABaH31R_loxIKXkmQHEBI2AuUU7uls92N3A-KERnk8bVK5cPRk1EsCj78n5LwUO3LMIxX4n5XcIcVFDaHDAgd9aguS4ZxYy4HSo9p0vBmVl3CBJQm-06sFdE2Tds/s320/India+211.jpg" border="0" alt=""id="BLOGGER_PHOTO_ID_5316464216394233362" />
<img style="display:block; margin:0px auto 10px; text-align:center;cursor:pointer; cursor:hand;width: 320px; height: 240px;" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEg6X4YOQwewwv3vgrd048IwVtZCTibtfd0gqHr4z8vLkxVm-ibIllEP_uh6Qz71Bxt07tEdxHzOK-zuxb0-cwdFupQHgywmqvqekUHIUPdfQGTOmakA-e-URU4z7RBCiQZtA63zbzbMcnOL/s320/India+210.jpg" border="0" alt=""id="BLOGGER_PHOTO_ID_5316464204120455074" />
<img style="display:block; margin:0px auto 10px; text-align:center;cursor:pointer; cursor:hand;width: 240px; height: 320px;" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEhGRMpAfh6P9Hrg4qg014hdbJlY2QWFzEOxPi3a0Cw1VCw4XKvzgelRMbOH4Lg6Q0mTiWELGkZH2WBWhBj-RA0LfrCzYZV-058i0bCVX_-S8p8ERi-Ip3ewpuYLVV64smGjt4ebZT8t3Vuz/s320/India+207.jpg" border="0" alt=""id="BLOGGER_PHOTO_ID_5316463421652346498" />
<img style="display:block; margin:0px auto 10px; text-align:center;cursor:pointer; cursor:hand;width: 320px; height: 240px;" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEhu5cPPet0aVxvxmVt6jtV2KAJzJfKXsWRkk4O19_dZq7M9mHT2qrhoTco_DD4n3Tzyyj2BlM6qCNfwdrInHlaQS_pIvBn90okyBa42k5M0V4JPhBEL832L7JiEzXBjmjL8iOS3aKX9HZV3/s320/100_2091.jpg" border="0" alt=""id="BLOGGER_PHOTO_ID_5316463406325216354" />
<img style="display:block; margin:0px auto 10px; text-align:center;cursor:pointer; cursor:hand;width: 320px; height: 86px;" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEhrrRBb5nxH0-jodXx8KkOxbzOPN52ZBpxhwGngIdogLY13UFlAtu1UR_zSh-YHPiRg2UJgxY0PbgMoVAak2Alqt_vTq7NLGe_QRirjnEOJkCWlEwXSLFIGnkMbD1VYV4sQSXf4e3niIgaB/s320/100_2090.jpg" border="0" alt=""id="BLOGGER_PHOTO_ID_5316463396970401890" />
Our family friend and taxi driver, Amerpal Toor, grew up in the city of Alwar so we decided to veer from the schedule and make a day trip to visit his town. On our way we stopped at a Hindu Temple way off of the beaten path. The people in the village were staring at us like they had never seen a white person before; maybe they hadn’t. The legend surround this temple site is that 200 years ago a giant man came to this place and gathered up three stones and tossed them to the ground. These stones fell and settled on each other creating a small mountain. He also stomped on the ground below the mountain which resulted in an indention that quickly filled with water and became the well for the local people. The temple is located at the top of the stacked rocks. We journeyed up the many steps to the top of the mountain. As we approached the top we removed our shoes and entered the temple to offer a monetary donation and received a small puffed rice snack in return from the local temple worker.

Tonight we had a famous snack from a street vender. It was a little hollowed out ball that was then dipped by hand into a round bowl filled with spicy water. I was told never to eat or drink anything from a street vender, but I didn’t want to offend Amerpal. I had two of the snacks and hoped the entire time I didn’t get sick from them. They actually didn’t taste too bad, besides a little spice they were actually quite bland. But I have found out it is not how things taste it is what they do to you afterwards. Luckily there were no ill effects.

As we were traveling through the streets we stopped by the home of a woman who had worked in Amerpal’s home when he was growing up; which wasn’t much of a home as you can imagine. The area reeked of urine and sewage. She was sitting on the ground, crippled by years of work. Her skin clung to her petite frame. She is 90 years old and she wore her years on her face and hands. Amerpal graciously hugged her and gave her some money. Her only son lay on his cot toward the back of an open area; his eyes glazed over and in a drunken stupor. Flies were buzzing around him like he was already dead; landing on his eyes and face. Words cannot even describe the conditions of this place.Jacob Gineshttp://www.blogger.com/profile/15762111258760112956noreply@blogger.com1tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-5595398707029850033.post-81503748161382386582009-03-23T11:57:00.001-07:002009-03-29T22:41:34.361-07:00March 20, 2009 - Jaipur<img style="display:block; margin:0px auto 10px; text-align:center;cursor:pointer; cursor:hand;width: 320px; height: 240px;" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEhQ-A56QqfxYrmNgih9fVctl7Ap4tmalxfed7KdUKYjTVdr6xw6v57E5wE7m0mzcVK9bJHCZ3zFP9rid6ydRYHSUa0U6QKNpB7Gn8p3UV6JAlkGiZVVU8o-usGeu0kKkWfalTOb1refOX55/s320/100_2071.jpg" border="0" alt=""id="BLOGGER_PHOTO_ID_5318851774970752258" />
<img style="display:block; margin:0px auto 10px; text-align:center;cursor:pointer; cursor:hand;width: 320px; height: 240px;" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEj0FS7b0vZdvwOe3D9RlZzZmYeM2ShDVWSzs_n8LgGC4sb_PItHbT87BN646UXYzluQ8IqXHi9FDuq1b4IPwke17tL-7Zh9CEl6diWskjqkt-3mMk_P5kxH32ya0y2Nizbq4eAxffJKwELQ/s320/100_2063.jpg" border="0" alt=""id="BLOGGER_PHOTO_ID_5318851645404475154" />
<img style="display:block; margin:0px auto 10px; text-align:center;cursor:pointer; cursor:hand;width: 240px; height: 320px;" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEhh5jKdhanahsENAKTadnGwokIqZMdsB0LYsjEpOsCRHCXMG_iIb4h56wRicG46KgPwcC8FlpBmL2PEAp-9GaqfHs1hv13fXR9RIYtAAvQQ3mIPYn1K1YsIZKv8_zvqGQlZxo3x-Vex2i3n/s320/100_2028.jpg" border="0" alt=""id="BLOGGER_PHOTO_ID_5318851639173673154" />

At the Amber Fort Palace I was able to ride an elephant. Of course it was a total tourist trap, but hey how often do you get to ride an elephant? The screen work at the palace was beautiful. From a small veranda you could see the old fort, Jaigarh Fort, up on the hill. I decided to take a few moments to sketch. An amazing thing happened; while I was sketching all the postcard and handcraft peddlers immediately stopped trying to get me to buy their stuff. Unfortunately for my father they were not so considerate. At many of the openings/archways to gathering areas I noticed small metal rings attached. I came to find out that large reed shades would be hung from those rings and covered with water, allowing for the natural breeze to pass through, cooling the interior space.

After the Amber Fort we visited Jantar Mantar. This outdoor observatory was filled with the most interesting devices for observing celestial bodies and telling time. Currently India runs by what is known as India Standard Time, but each city has its own local time. One instrument at Jantar Mantar used a triangular wall with a bisecting parabolic curve to tell the exact local time from the shadow that was created. The craftsmanship on the parabolic curves was incredible.

In the evening we decided to do some shopping; I only mention this because we went to some of the craziest places. Well maybe the places weren’t crazy but the journey to the places was. We would be walking through crowds of people and then all of a sudden make a turn into an alley just big enough to squeeze through and pop into some back alley shop filled with goods. The streets in the city are just filled with nooks and crannies every where. Without someone showing us the way we would never find such places. To say the least it was adventurous and very entertaining.Jacob Gineshttp://www.blogger.com/profile/15762111258760112956noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-5595398707029850033.post-78992525893977285362009-03-23T11:38:00.000-07:002009-04-02T14:59:13.229-07:00March 19, 2009 - Traveling to Jaipur

I woke early this morning to the sounds from the local Hindu Temple softly moving through the skies and my stomach telling me that it didn’t like me very much. Believe me, it is no fun being sick in India; especially when you have a full day of traveling. We traveled along some of the bumpiest roads I have ever been on and my stomach was churning; at times it was almost unbearable. I tried to sketch in the car to take my mind off my sickness but a lot of the time the roads were so rough that I couldn’t even scribble out a sketch.

Because of the amount of time spent traveling during our trip I have decided to sketch while in the car. This posses a couple of unique problems: 1. No road is very smooth here in India and 2. The scenes pass by so quickly that it becomes difficult to document what I see.

I have had to use a particular sketching style while traveling that takes advantage of the motion of the car and irregularities of the road. I have had to allow for the impurities of such a working environment to become part of the beauty of the sketch. Understanding the conditional context surrounding my sketching will allow a broader understanding and appreciation for what I have been creating. The sketches that I have produced provide a unique mapping of the landscape. Instead of understanding the landscape through a road map, topographic map, or other standardized mapping method these sketches provide a mapping unlike any other. I have seen the change from flat plains of wheat and brick yards to soft rolling hills and dry rocky mountains. Animals have changed as well; cattle to camels to monkeys and even to elephants; all of which are in the streets. The people have also changed. One man told me that every few kilometers the food, language, music and the people change; providing for a unique experience even if one does not travel far.

It has been a very different experience having to sketch virtually on the run. I have had to process information quickly and produce a mental image from which to sketch. I have found this fairly challenging. I have had to quickly deduct what is important from a scene and document the intent and my interpretation of what is being processed through my eyes. Although this is challenging I have found it very satisfying. Not only has it kept me mentally engaged but it has heightened my awareness. Capturing the essence of something is perhaps more important than creating an exact replication.

While visiting the city of Hansi I was able to take a motorcycle ride through the streets to the fort atop a small plateau on the edge of town. The experience was much different than in a car. We sped pass people and vehicles; coming within inches of what I am sure would have been a disastrous ending to my leisure ride. The fort’s main gate is an impressive monolithic mass that seems to slice into the hillside demonstrating its power and dominance in the landscape. The fort also contained a Muslim Temple and there was a lot of commotion happening around that site. The individuals whom we were visiting in the city (who where Hindi) would not even consider going close to the Muslim Temple and directed us to leave. I could feel the tension that exists between Muslims and Hindus in that very moment.Jacob Gineshttp://www.blogger.com/profile/15762111258760112956noreply@blogger.com1tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-5595398707029850033.post-40937360155888851492009-03-21T12:35:00.000-07:002009-04-02T10:50:06.939-07:00March 18, 2009 - Patran
Leaving Chandigarh, we traveled southward to the small town of Patran. During our journey our driver left the car for a few moments to conduct some business at a street shop. While we were parked a young child, holding her presumably younger sister, approached our car. She constantly tapped on our windows begging for help. Once again my heart broke for these children. Whenever we would make eye contact with the little one she would give us the most adorable smile, which made it even harder to bear. It is truely incredible the amount of poverty there is in this country.

Once were arrived in Patran we visited with the Toor family and spent the night on their 30 acre farm. This family really opened their home to us and we felt very welcome. They had donated 3 acres of land adjacent to their property for the construction of a new "Nanaksar Academy". Eager to show off their school, they took us on a tour. The school is one year old with an addition that is still being constructed and you could tell it was the pride of the community. It was interesting to see the craftsmanship and quality. Compared to what we are used to it felt old and very used. Beyond the concrete and plaster was something deeper though. There was a sense of achievement and accomplishment - knowing that their children would have a place to study and learn. This building lent itself to a spirit of entrepreneurship and investment in the future of their children and their community. I will never know just how much that school means to them but I know it goes deeper than words can tell. Later in the day, about 20 minutes before sunset one of the Toor sons asked me to sketch the school for them. I quickly grabbed my pens and sketchbook and down the road we went. Finding a somewhat appropriate ledge I sat down and frantically sketched. The evening light was quickly fading and music filled the air from the local Hindu Temple; providing the perfect backdrop. Insects and mosquitos were coming out in the cool air. (Later, I discovered that I have received many bites to the arms and legs while trying to draw the school.) It felt good to sketch and to be forced to sketch so quickly, with anxious observers peering over my shoulders. At one time I even needed the assistance of a flashlight to complete the drawing. That drawing is now on display in the school for all of the children to see. It is amazing the power of such a little sketch. I guess i take my meager ability to sketch for granted most of the time. It is just a drawing right? To some it is much more!

Perhaps professing through sketching is much more than a self gratifying act. it requires a selfless act and a deeply truthful expression. By giving my sketch away, never to see it again perhaps, I find that it means more to me. All I have is a simple photograph, taken in poor light, to remind me of that moment when on a cool evening a sketch became much more than a sketch, it became an extension of the school and what that school means to its community.

After my sketching was done we traveled a short distance to visit the local Temple. I approached with a deep respect and reverence to such a place. Music and singing had been filling the air of the village since 3am and would continue until 9pm, only to start over again in the morning. We washed, removed our socks and shoes, covered our heads and entered. Approaching the focal point of the Temple we put our hands together and knelt before the Hindu God after which we received a sugar gift from the Temple worker. The Toor family visit this Temple every day in the morning and evening. It is part of their daily ritual and an integral part of their lives, in fact you could say that it is central. In addition, located at the highest point of their home is another worship space, allowing for worship at any time.Jacob Gineshttp://www.blogger.com/profile/15762111258760112956noreply@blogger.com4tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-5595398707029850033.post-47725895382544403582009-03-21T12:13:00.000-07:002009-03-23T11:56:10.225-07:00March 17, 2009 - Chandigarh

The morning was spent at the Gandhi Bhawan observing and sketching. Founded as the Center for Gandhian Studies at Chandigarh University it is beautifully sited within the campus. The only down side was normally the building is surrounded on three sides with water but today the pool was dry – leaving it to feel heavier on the landscape than normal. The Gandhi Bhawan was designed by Pierre Jeanneret, cousin to Le Corbusier. Pierre also aided his cousin in the master planning of the city. The buildings unique angles and geometry provide a contrast to the regularity and rectilinear qualities of the city and University campus. As the sun beat down on the back of my neck I relaxed and sketched; occasionally having the curious passer-by.

Next we made our journey to the government buildings of Chandigarh. I had been looking forward to visiting these master works of Le Corbusier for quite some time and they were a big reason why I choose India for the Fellowship. However, because of the upcoming elections visits were heavily restricted. I was only able to visit the exterior courtyard of the High Court; and that came only with much pleading with the guards. I think that my dad didn't stop shooting video the entire trip. The driving in India is nothing short of orchestrated madness! The streets are filled with cars, trucks, motorcycles, rickshaws, bicycles, dogs, horses, cows, camels, and pretty much anything else that moves. Even the "highways" are filled with everyone and everything. The sounds of horns blaring fills the air as driver communicates with driver for their own piece of road. Moving through Delhi was pretty slow going - people are everywhere!

You can't help but be impressed by the shear amount of people in the city - even when you leave the city you never run out of people. Depending on what part of the city you are in you will see people of every economic station. Poverty is all around you. Groups of tents are patched together from pieces of trash, discarded cloth, old fabrics, rotten wood, sheet metal and any other material that can be scavenged forming their own communities. One such community was just outside of the city jail. As we drove by I noticed a woman siting in the dirt in the center median of the road, clothed with tattered rags. As we slowed I noticed a small child sitting in the dirt with her; mostly naked and covered in filth. My heart sank. For some reason I could almost cope with seeing adults in those conditions - but a child, a baby, it pretty much breaks your heart. You know they have no chance at what we call a normal life - what is normal anyway? Then in a flash we speed onward to more images of the same.

One of the other things that you notice is how dirty everything is - it seems to saturate the city with a blanket of dirt and garbage. I have never seen that amount of trash anywhere before in my life; well maybe at the local garbage dump. Trash can be seen deposited out of car and bus windows on a regular basis. It stacks up and begins to overtake the city. One of the only ways to try to rid the city of the garbage is to burn it. Fires silently smolder sending smoke softly into the atmosphere providing the city with a layer of smog that is so heavy that you see it, you feel it, and you quite certainly smell it.

Arriving in Chandigarh, you notice that the city is much cleaner than in Delhi. We were also greeted by one of a few "Open Hand" statues. The city was master-planned by Le Corbusier and I am very excited to experience the city and visit the government buildings tomorrow.Jacob Gineshttp://www.blogger.com/profile/15762111258760112956noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-5595398707029850033.post-50678705868566755302009-03-21T10:15:00.000-07:002009-03-29T21:12:31.205-07:00March 14-16, 2006: Arrival to Delhi, India
My father and I boarded our flight from Salt Lake City, Utah to Delhi, India on the afternoon of Saturday the 14th of March. We had layovers in Denver, Colorado and Frankfurt, Germany. Perhaps the most interesting part of the journey was watching an Indian movie during our light called "Rock On". It was about a band in India called "magik" that broke up and after 10 years came back together. The plot was fairly lame but the mixture of English and the native language created an interesting dialog relationship. The use of English was only for modern sayings and catchy one-liners.

After arriving in Delhi at 1:00am we went straight to our hotel. As I walked to our taxi I tried to take in the smell of India. Sure it was a little unique but I didn't find it as bad as some of the stories that had been told to me. At the same moment that I was having this thought and taking in a deep breath we passed an area that reeked of urine. I guess that is what I get for breathing too heavily!

Sleeping the first night was not an easy chore। After a couple of hours we were up and ready to go। The only problem was it was only 5:00am। Adjusting to the 11 and 1/2 hour time change may take a while.

Welcome to India!
वेल्कोमे तो इंडिया!Jacob Gineshttp://www.blogger.com/profile/15762111258760112956noreply@blogger.com1tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-5595398707029850033.post-71655847053804113852009-03-12T09:19:00.000-07:002009-03-12T09:52:24.789-07:00Sketching as ProfessingThe following sketches are from my travels throughout the world and are the sketches that I included in my Fellowship proposal. Each sketch represents, for me, a unique architectural experience. I can still remember creating each sketch vividly. In a recent conversation with Julio Bermudez we discussed sketching/drawing as a form of architectural practice and I think that it goes even beyond that and can be or should be a way in which we profess. The question is "what are we professing?" For each of us this can be a deeply personal investigation and demonstration; filled with meaning and intent. Each sketch is not only a document representative of a time and place but is a reflection of the person engaged in the creative process. I hope that through my journey and sketching in India that I will begin to understand more fully what it means to profess and what message I am professing.

I hope you enjoy these sketches as much as I do!

<img style="margin: 0px auto 10px; Candidates for the fellowship submit a portfolio of their work and a concise proposal for travel and study outlining their objectives, plan of implementation and how they anticipate the fellowship contributing to their growth as an architect. The length of time, place of travel and agenda are not restricted. The selection of the recipient of the fellowship is made by a committee composed of representatives of the school's faculty, the architectural profession and former fellowship recipients.

The recipient of the fellowship is required to keep a journal during the period of travel and study. Upon completion of the travel, the journal is given to the Graduate School of Architecture to become part of the school's library. The recipient also presents a lecture at the school which reflects upon his or her experiences during the period of the fellowship.

For the endowment to remain viable in the future it must be maintained carefully and continue to grow. The funds are maintained through the University of Utah endowment program. Modest growth has been maintained through contributions received annually and a program of reinvestment of a portion of the endowment's earnings.

Since 1987, the first year an award was made, a fellow has been named nearly every year. The original intention of enhancing the professional lives of students who show particular intellectual and professional promise has been achieved and will continue to enrich the school and its students. The fellowship also continues as a living memorial to the work, vision and dedication of Roger Bailey.

Information provided by Betty BaileyJacob Gineshttp://www.blogger.com/profile/15762111258760112956noreply@blogger.com1tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-5595398707029850033.post-2709338167414631702009-03-10T09:18:00.000-07:002009-03-10T13:59:15.480-07:00Roger Bailey and the Fellowship
Roger Bailey's influence and direct contributions have been felt in many areas. Among the things for which he is most remembered are his contributions to the University's campus plan, planning for Salt Lake City, his accomplishments as a watercolorist and his direction of the Salt Lake Art Center. Central to all of his activities was his role as Initiator, in 1949, and Chair of the architecture program at the University of Utah until his retirement in 1963.

When Roger Bailey died in 1985, his friends, family members, former students, faculty and associates in the architectural profession sought an appropriate way to honor his memory. Since post-graduate travel had served as such a strong influence on Prof. Bailey's life, a traveling fellowship that would give a similar opportunity to other young architects appeared most fitting. A great outpouring of affection for Roger Bailey and support for the idea resulted in the establishment of the Roger Bailey Traveling Fellowship.

The following recollections recount some of Professor Bailey's experiences leading up to the establishment of the architecture program at the University of Utah.

In 1915 when I enrolled in Architecture at Cornell University, the chief design critic, E. V. Meeks, commuted weekly to Ithaca from his desk in Carrere and Hastings' office in New York City and the junior critic was fresh from McKim, Mead and White. We used the programs of the Beaux Arts Institute of Design and grew familiar with all the books on Renaissance architecture, but never learned about Louis Sullivan or Frank Lloyd Wright who were considered to be craxy people "out there" in Chicago. After graduating in 1920, I had jobs in various New York City offices that did traditional work and felt I had hit the jackpot when I was employed by John Russell Pope's prestigious firm. In 1922 I entered the Paris Prize Competition and, as winner, took off for Paris for three years. the French students knew about Sullivan and H. H. Richardson, and our atelier had a book on Wright's work but they were not interested in LeCorbusier's articles currently being published or the modern work going on in Holland and elsewhere on the continent. I spent a good deal of time traveling throughout Europe, which was not customary, but I felt was an educational opportunity not to be missed.

It was not until my years on the Michigan faculty, under Professor Emil Lorch, that my understanding and appreciation of the historical importance of Louis Sullivan and the so-called Chicago School developed. Lorch knew Sullivan and Wright and was familiar with what was going on in Europe. My real education in architecture began under Emil Lorch and I learned from him what the so-called modern movement was really all about.

From 1936 through 1938 I went on leave from Michigan to accept E. V. Meeks' invitation to be Head Critic at Yale University and, during those summer, was Visiting Professor at Cornell. I was also convinced that my niche on the faculty was too confining and that perhaps I could make a larger contribution. I decided to see what was going on in architectural education in the western part of the country. In the late summer of 1948, my wife and I drove into Salt Lake City for an overnight stop on our way to the West Coast.

Roger Bailey, FAIA
Professor Emeritus

As I recall the story, he was making a summer trip and stopped off in Salt Lake City and in a general conversation realized how much an architectural educational center was needed in this vast area. It is such big country that it would need a broad training to fit an architect to practice appropriately. Any small idea would be out of scale. So he talked with the president of the University, and Lo! the department was on its way. Roger and Betty gave their lives unstintedly to its establishment. Nothing was too much trouble or time, and their house became a meeting place for students and friends to discuss architecture.

I like to recall the days at Roger and Betty's apartment when we talked far into the night about architectural goals.

William W. Wurster, FAIA
Former Dean of Architecture, MIT
Dean Emeritus, University of California, Berkeley

It was at this time that I first met Roger Bailey, who came to my office without an appointment and asked to see me. My secretary explained that I was busy in conferences that day and would not be able to spend much time with him. He said he was in no hurry since he was on a vacation trip. His enthusiasm and persistence caused him to make an appointment for another day, and when he returned to fill the appointment he brought with him a watercolor painting of the open-pit coper mines west of the city which he had painted during the interim. He presented it to me and told me it would illustrate what he had in mind. He informed me that he was Professor Roger Bailey, of the Department of Architecture of the University of Michigan, and that he was married to the daughter of a former dean of architecture at that university. In other words, he let me know that he was not a novice in his profession.

He then proceeded to tell me that the University of Utah had a unique location and a great opportunity to develop a style of architecture which would fit in with the environment of this region. He talked about the mountains and the excavations in them which offered unusual challenges for building in such a unique environment. He had the perspective of a true pioneer.

A. The ultimate meaning of any building is beyond architecture; it directs our consciousness back to the world and towards our own sense of self and being. Significant architecture makes us experience ourselves as complete embodied and spiritual beings."

Juhani Pallsmaa
The Eyes of the Skin

As I have studied architecture and the cultures that coexist with the built environment I am always amazed at what they have to teach me. By using architecture as a vehicle for exploration I have broadened my understanding of others and their ways of being. As a member of the 2006 Design Build Bluff team I had the opportunity to design a home for a Navajo woman named Caroline Lameman. Her home became an expression of her juxtaposed life on and off of the Navajo Indian reservation. The home was metaphorically a timeline of her life; recognizing the past and moving toward the future. For my Master’s Project I studied the relationship of hip hop to architecture - focusing on African American identity formulation; specifically in the community of Watts, California. The project became a place where kids from the community could collaborate with professionals to create, record, and perform their music. The building is an instrument by which youth are able to express themselves through their music.

Christopher Alexander in his book The Timeless Way of Building stated, “The search which we make… in our own lives is the central search of any person, and the crux of any individual person’s story. It is the search for the moments and situations when we are most alive.”

I have long been fascinated by the culture and architecture of India. In a country that holds nearly one sixth of the world’s population I hope to gain a better understanding into the meaning and significance of its structures. The cities of India are like palimpsestic canvases containing layers of history and tradition.

I will focus my travels at and around what is known as the golden triangle of India; starting at Dehli, the countries capital. Dehli or New Dehli is a virtual melting pot of traditional Indian architecture and contemporary design.

From Dehli I will travel north to the city of Chandigarh. Master planned by the modernist Le Corbusier, Chandigarh will lend an interesting perspective on outside influences to the culture and building practices in the region.

Next will be Agra, home of the Taj Mahal. Many believe Agra to be the Indian city of “aesthetic perfection”.

Gwalior is dominated by its fort that overlooks the city. Temples are scattered throughout the fort complex, but probably the most intriguing aspect of the fort are the cave temples located at the base of the hill.

Last, is Khajuraho. This temple complex is a great synthesis of architecture and sculpture; and questions the relationship between the sacred and the profane with its kamasutra figures and erotic imagery.

As I understand the different ways in which meaning has been assigned or adopted by the people and the architecture in India I hope to be able to use that knowledge in my professional practice and teaching. And more importantly, to use my experience in India to give added meaning to my life and those around me.Jacob Gineshttp://www.blogger.com/profile/15762111258760112956noreply@blogger.com2
